Running Quests and Giveaways Without Attracting Bots

How crypto projects can run quests, giveaways and reward campaigns that reach real users, with task design, eligibility rules, sybil filtering and scam defence.

Quests and giveaways are popular in crypto marketing. Users complete tasks such as following an account, joining a server, trying a product or sharing a post, and earn rewards. The format can introduce real users to a product. It can also attract armies of bots and reward farmers who complete every task, collect rewards and never return.

Careful design keeps rewards flowing to the people you want to reach.

Decide what you want users to do

Tasks should match the campaign goal:

Goal Better tasks Weaker tasks
Product adoption Complete a real transaction, try a feature Follow and retweet
Education Pass a short quiz after reading a guide Like a post
Community growth Participate in a call, answer a question Join a server
Feedback Submit a useful bug report or suggestion Tag three friends

Social tasks are easy to automate. Tasks involving real product use, thoughtful answers or live participation are harder to fake.

Make rewards proportionate

Large rewards attract large farming operations. Consider:

  • Smaller individual rewards spread across more genuine participants
  • Rewards weighted toward quality contributions
  • Raffles among eligible participants rather than guaranteed payouts for everyone
  • Non-financial rewards such as roles, badges or early access

Rewards in stablecoins are clear and easy to value. Rewards in new tokens may be sold immediately and create confusion about value.

Set eligibility rules

Publish rules before the campaign starts:

  1. Campaign dates and time zone
  2. Eligible regions, if any restrictions apply
  3. Required tasks and how they are verified
  4. How winners are chosen
  5. How and when rewards are distributed
  6. Grounds for disqualification, such as multiple accounts

Clear rules make disqualifications defensible and reduce complaints.

Filter sybil accounts

Farmers use many wallets and social accounts. Filtering methods include:

  • Minimum account age and activity for social accounts
  • On-chain history requirements for wallets, such as past transactions over several months
  • Clustering wallets funded from the same source
  • Removing identical submissions or answers
  • Capping rewards per wallet and per social account
  • Manual review of top participants

No filter is perfect, but combining several makes farming expensive enough to discourage most operators.

Protect participants from scams

Giveaways attract impersonators who post fake winner announcements and claim links. Defend participants:

  • Announce winners only through official channels
  • Never require winners to connect wallets to claim, if you can send rewards directly
  • Tell participants the team will never DM them first
  • Pin the official campaign page and rules

If rewards require a claim page, host it on your official domain and publish the contract address in advance.

Pay out reliably

Late or messy payouts generate more negative attention than the campaign generated positive. Distribute rewards on the announced schedule, publish transaction links where appropriate and handle disputes through a clear process.

Measure real impact

Count what matters after the campaign:

  • Participants who used the product again within a month
  • Retained community members
  • Quality of feedback received
  • Cost per retained user

Compare against other channels. Many teams discover that one well-targeted campaign with modest rewards outperforms a massive giveaway.

Reward with something lasting

Some projects reward top community contributors with visible recognition rather than tokens. A Landmark or pin on the Proud Globe dedicated to a campaign's winners, with a tagline celebrating them, gives participants something to show off that farmers have little reason to chase.
